Best Beaches in Bali for Families with Toddlers and Babies
Not all Bali beaches are family-friendly. Here are the calmest, safest beaches for young children — with shade, shallow water, and easy access.
Bali's coastline is stunning, but many beaches have strong currents, steep drops, and rough surf that make them unsuitable for families with young children. The good news is that several beaches are genuinely safe and enjoyable for toddlers and babies — you just need to know where to go.
Sanur Beach
Sanur is widely considered the best beach in Bali for young families. A coral reef offshore breaks the waves, creating a calm, shallow lagoon that toddlers can wade in safely. The beach has a paved boardwalk (great for strollers), shaded areas under trees, and a relaxed atmosphere without the crowds or nightlife of Kuta or Seminyak.
There are beachfront restaurants with high chairs, and the water stays shallow for a long way out. Early morning is best for cooler temperatures. Lifeguards are present at the main beach areas.
Nusa Dua Beach
The resort beaches in Nusa Dua are clean, well-maintained, and sheltered. The water is calm and clear, with gentle waves suitable for toddlers. Most resorts have their own beach section with sunbeds, shade structures, and food service. If you're staying in Nusa Dua, this is the most convenient option — just walk from your hotel to the sand.
The public beach at Geger Beach (south Nusa Dua) is also excellent: shallow, warm, and uncrowded on weekdays.
Jimbaran Beach
Jimbaran Bay has calm water and a wide, gently sloping sand beach. It's popular for sunset seafood dinners, and during the day it's quiet enough for families. The sand is firm and easy to walk on with a stroller or carrier. Water depth increases gradually, giving you control over how deep your toddler wanders.
There's less shade here than Sanur, so bring your own beach tent or umbrella for babies.
Padang Padang Beach
A small, sheltered cove on the Bukit Peninsula. The access involves steep steps (not stroller-friendly — use a carrier), but the beach itself is enclosed and the water is calm inside the cove. It's a beautiful spot for a morning visit before it gets crowded. Not ideal for full-day beach trips with babies due to limited shade and facilities, but perfect for a 1–2 hour visit.
Seminyak Beach
Seminyak's beach is wide and walkable, but the surf can be strong. It's better for parents who want to sit on the sand while toddlers play in dry sand (rather than wading). The beach clubs offer pools, shade, and food — some (like Potato Head) have shallow kids' pools that are safer than the ocean for young children. Not a swimming beach for toddlers, but excellent for a beach-club family day out.
Beaches to avoid with young children
Kuta Beach: Strong currents, steep shore break, extremely crowded, and aggressive hawkers. Not suitable for babies or toddlers in the water.
Uluwatu beaches (Suluban, Blue Point): Accessed via steep, uneven stairs. Powerful surf and sharp reef. Spectacular for adults, but not safe for young children.
Echo Beach (Canggu): Strong rip currents and rough surf. Scenic, but keep children out of the water.
Beach essentials for families
SPF 50+ sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours), UV swimwear and rash vest, wide-brimmed hat, pop-up beach tent or UPF shade, reef-safe sunscreen for ocean swimming, fresh water for rinsing sand, snacks and sealed water, and nappies/swim nappies. Arrive before 10 AM and leave by noon to avoid peak UV.
Getting to the beach
If you're travelling between areas (hotel in Seminyak, day trip to Sanur), book a private driver with a child seat for the journey. Beach trips should be relaxing — not stressful transport negotiations. A pre-booked car with a fitted baby seat means you can focus on sunscreen and sandcastles instead of logistics.
